The Special Investigations Unit is trying to determine if officers with the North Bay OPP contributed to a man’s death. Last Thursday afternoon police responded to a driving complaint on Highway 17 in Bonfield. They found the driver in question, arrested him and put him in their cruiser. However paramedics were called when the man went into medical distress and shortly after that he had no vital signs. About 90 minutes elapsed from the time the 49-year-old was arrested and he was pronounced dead in hospital. If the SIU determines police are to blame for the man’s death, the officers can be charged.
