NDP want to close bribery loop hole in Ontario Elections Act

It hasn’t taken the Opposition long to try and change the Ontario Elections Act over what constitutes a bribe.  Right now it’s illegal to offer a bribe, but not illegal for a recipient to ask for or accept a bribe.  On Thursday Timmins-James Bay MPP Gilles Bisson proposed legislation to plug up that loop hole so politicians can’t ask for or receive bribes.  In introducing his Private Member’s Bill, Bisson says it’s only common sense that wanting to be bribed should also be illegal.  The shortcomings in the Elections Act were revealed this week thanks to the prosecutor overseeing the Sudbury by-election bribery case.  Vern Brewer alleges Sudbury MPP Glenn Thibeault wanted something in return to run for the Liberals, something Thibeault denies.  Former Liberal top aide Pat Sorbara is charged with bribing Thibeault to represent the Liberals in Sudbury.
