Carbon monoxide and smoke alarm detector campaign on

The West Nipissing Fire Department is joining forces with the Caisse Populaire to help save lives.  Both agencies are sponsoring a campaign to sell smoke and carbon monoxide detectors at a discount.  Fire chief Richard Maranda says there’s no doubt CO units save lives and points to a local incident just last Friday in a West Nipissing home.  Maranda says the woman of the home wasn’t feeling well and went to bed and the man also felt woozy.  In turns out there was carbon monoxide in the home coming from a fuel-fired stove.   The CO unit detected the deadly gas and firefighters responded saving both people.

Maranda says if it’s a fuel-fired appliance, it can emit CO.  This includes furnaces, wood stoves, a hot water tank a gas dryer and gas stove.   As long as the appliances are installed properly there’s no danger of CO hurting the occupants.    The The Caisse is selling CO detectors all this week for $20 each and smoke alarms for $15.   A combo unit is also available for $30.
