Man charged for collecting dead relative’s benefits cheques for years

OPP in Blind River have cracked a case where a man collected more than $420,000 in government cheques made out to a dead person.  The accused used a dead relative’s name and social insurance number to collect Old Age Security, CPP and GIS cheques over a number of years.

The OPP’s anti-rackets branch learned about the potential fraud in May and began investigating an individual.  The investigation ended last week with the arrest of a 63-year-old man.  Among the charges he faces are fraud over $5,000, personation with intent and a forgery related offense.
