Police chief clarifies sexual assault numbers in North Bay

An article from Maclean’s that finds a lot of sexual assaults take place in North Bay has Police Chief Shawn Devine trying to clarify the number.  Maclean’s says North Bay ranks fifth when it comes to sexual assaults in the city.  Devine doesn’t dismiss the ranking but he says people have to understand what generated it.  Devine says North Bay is not a city where criminals break into someone’s home and commit sexual assault.

He says many of these crimes were committed by people who know the victim.  There were 62 sexual assaults in the city last year.   Devine also says by working with groups like the Amelia Rising Sexual Assault Centre, the goal is to lower these crimes.
