West Nipissing police concerned about illegal taxis

Inspector Ray St. Pierre of the West Nipissing police is concerned about non sanctioned taxis providing services to people.  Recently, some drivers have sprung up and are getting paid to move people around.  St. Pierre says police conduct a wide checklist to make sure taxis are safe, but they can’t do it with the new operators and he says that creates an iffy situation.

St. Pierre says police routinely check cabs to make sure they’re in good working order but since they can’t check these latest vehicles, he says people getting into them could be taking a risk.   He says police don’t know if the vehicle is insured, they also don’t know if the driver has been screened, has a criminal record or even has a driver’s license.   St. Pierre says there is only one licensed taxi company in West Nipissing.
