Pay equity victory for mental health workers

It’s taken more than two decades, but mental health workers in the Cochrane-Timiskaming region are getting pay equity adjustments.  Back in 1994, the 170 workers with the Canadian Mental Health Association negotiated a pay equity plan.  The employees are represented by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union.  Union president Smokey Thomas says the province passed the Pay Equity Act in 1987.  However it’s not clear why the Cochrane-Timiskaming employees’ paycheques weren’t adjusted.  The retroactive payments will amount to $1.6 million.
