Con artists have created a twist on the Canada Revenue Agency scam in Northern Ontario. The OPP say a fake CRA employee calls people saying you owe the agency money and that you have to pay with an online gaming gift card. Police say a woman in the Sault Ste. Marie area fell for the con and she lost an undisclosed amount of money. The OPP are also asking the public that if they see anyone buying large amounts of gift cards to ask if they got a call from someone saying they’re from the CRA. The OPP say the CRA doesn’t use gift cards when collecting bills and add potential victims should call police before handing over cards that could be worth $100s or $1,000s.
