Scammers are continuing the CRA con in the north and that’s prompted another warning from the OPP. Police say across the country, people fall for the scam. Last year these fraudsters conned about 750 people out of nearly $2.5 million. One reason people fall for the scam is they don’t verify with the Canada Revenue Agency itself that they really owe it money. The con artists always make their call sound urgent and that’s another reason why the victim doesn’t take the time to verify the story with the CRA. Police say other clues that tip you off that the supposed CRA call is a scam is when they ask you not to tell anyone they called. Some scammers threaten the person with jail time, and that’s never something the Canada Revenue Agency would say over the phone.
